Planetary equilibrium temperature from the top-of-atmosphere energy balance (Seinfeld & Pandis 2006 Ch. 4 Eqs. 4.5-4.7). The absorbed solar flux F_S = S_0/4 * (1 - R_p), the emitted longwave flux F_L = sigma * T_e^4 (Stefan-Boltzmann law), and at equilibrium F_S = F_L. Solving the constraint gives T_e = (S_0/4 * (1-R_p) / sigma)^(1/4). At canonical Earth values (S_0 = 1370 W/m^2, R_p = 0.3), F_S = F_L = 239.75 W/m^2 and T_e = 255 K (S&P p. 101).
