SnowDensity

Bulk density of newly fallen snow as a piecewise function of atmospheric temperature, following Anderson (1976) as parameterized in Eq. 5.10 of Oleson et al. (2010, CLM Tech Note Ch. 5). Three regimes: (1) warm snow (T_atm > T_f + 2 K) → rho_sno = 50 + 1.7*17^1.5 (saturated warm-side value); (2) intermediate (T_f - 15 K < T_atm <= T_f + 2 K) → rho_sno = 50 + 1.7*((T_atm - T_f + 15)/1K)^1.5; (3) cold (T_atm <= T_f - 15 K) → rho_sno = 50 (saturated cold-side floor). Migrated from UrbanCanopy.jl@9200edd4 src/hydrology.jl:25 (`SnowDensity` @component). Parameterized as observed-only: T_atm is the input parameter; rho_sno is an algebraic output.

Description

Bulk density of newly fallen snow as a piecewise function of atmospheric temperature, following Anderson (1976) as parameterized in Eq. 5.10 of Oleson et al. (2010, CLM Tech Note Ch. 5). Three regimes: (1) warm snow (T_atm > T_f + 2 K) → rho_sno = 50 + 1.717^1.5 (saturated warm-side value); (2) intermediate (T_f - 15 K < T_atm <= T_f + 2 K) → rho_sno = 50 + 1.7((T_atm - T_f + 15)/1K)^1.5; (3) cold (T_atm <= T_f - 15 K) → rho_sno = 50 (saturated cold-side floor). Migrated from UrbanCanopy.jl@9200edd4 src/hydrology.jl:25 (SnowDensity @component). Parameterized as observed-only: T_atm is the input parameter; rho_sno is an algebraic output.

Reference

_source_ref: UrbanCanopy.jl@9200edd4f15609f20339d3a7d104de8064544310:src/hydrology.jl:25 Upstream SnowDensity is an MTK @component whose single input T_atm is a @parameters and whose single output rho_sno is a time-indexed @variables with one algebraic equation (no derivative). Identical equation structure preserved here.

The upstream component declares eight @constants, all encoded here as parameters with the upstream default values: T_f = 273.15 K (freezing temperature, Oleson 2010 Table 1.4), one_K = 1.0 K (unit-balancing literal — the upstream MTK component divides (T_atm - T_f + T_offset) by one_K so the dimensional algebra of (...)^1.5 works out without introducing a fractional exponent on a unit-bearing quantity), rho_base = 50.0 kg/m^3 (cold-side saturated density floor and the additive base of the intermediate-regime formula), rho_coeff = 1.7 kg/m^3 (Anderson coefficient for the intermediate regime), rho_warm = 169.15775258035036 kg/m^3 (precomputed warm-side saturated value: 50.0 + 1.7 * 17.0^1.5 — upstream stores this as a symbolic constant evaluated to a numeric default at component construction), T_offset = 15.0 K (Anderson temperature offset inside the (…)^1.5 term), T_thresh_high = 2.0 K (upper threshold above the freezing point — 2 K above freezing the warm-side saturation engages), T_thresh_low = -15.0 K (lower threshold below the freezing point — at 15 K below freezing the cold-side floor engages). Greek ρ is renamed rho for ASCII parameter names per the rig convention (matches snow_compaction.esm).

The two thresholds are compared with strict > per the upstream ifelse semantics: at the upper boundary T_atm = T_f + 2 = 275.15 K, the first condition T_atm > T_f + T_thresh_high is FALSE (strict greater-than), so the second (intermediate) branch is taken; at the lower boundary T_atm = T_f - 15 = 258.15 K, the second condition T_atm > T_f + T_thresh_low is FALSE, so the cold-side floor branch is taken. This matches the upstream test fixture (SnowDensity - Equation Verification, hydrology_test.jl:351) which asserts both boundary cases.

Observability classification: this component is functionally observed-only — the single output is given by one algebraic equation in terms of the parameters (the (t) time index has no role since there is no derivative). Test scenarios use time_span: [0, 1] and sample at t=0 to mirror the convention used by the other observed-only ESM files in this rig (snow_capping_runoff.esm, impervious_runoff.esm, etc.).

Tolerance rationale (model-level rel=1e-6): observed-only algebraic system (no ODE integration); the equation involves a fractional exponent (^1.5) and an ifelse, both of which are at IEEE-754 ULP precision. 1e-6 matches the rtol used by the upstream Julia test (hydrology_test.jl:361) and leaves comfortable headroom above ULP roundoff. Tighter abs: 1e-12 is asserted on the cold-side branch outputs that are exactly rho_base = 50.0 by construction so the assertion does not silently accept a stuck-at-1e-3 regression._

Analyses

rho_sno_vs_T_atm_full_curve

Sweep T_atm across the full piecewise-defined regime (240-280 K, 41 points, 1 K spacing). Surfaces the three-regime structure of CLM Eq. 5.10: a cold-side floor at rho_base = 50 kg/m^3 for T_atm <= T_f - 15 = 258.15 K, the (…)^1.5 ramp from rho_base up to rho_warm in the intermediate band, and the warm-side plateau at rho_warm = 169.158 kg/m^3 for T_atm > T_f + 2 = 275.15 K. The two saturation plateaus and the connecting Anderson-1976 ramp are the canonical visualization of new-snow density.

Time span: 0.0 → 1.0

Swept over: T_atm

rho_sno vs T_atm: cold-side plateau at 50 kg/m^3, Anderson-1976 (…)^1.5 ramp from T_f - 15 to T_f + 2, warm-side plateau at 169.158 kg/m^3.
