HeavisideBoundaryCondition

Smoothed Heaviside surface boundary condition for coupling surface and subsurface water flow, from Wang et al. (2020) (Advances in Water Resources 137, 103499), Eqs. 3 and 5. The component switches a single surface node continuously between a ponded (saturated) boundary and an unsaturated boundary as the pressure head h crosses zero, replacing a hard step with the smooth approximations eta_omega(h) = (1/pi)*atan(h/omega) + 1/2 (smoothed Heaviside, Eq. 5a) and delta_omega(h) = (1/pi)*omega/(omega^2 + h^2) (smoothed Dirac delta, Eq. 5b; delta_omega = d eta_omega/dh). The head obeys the boundary condition d/dt[eta_omega(h)*h] = P - I_infil (Eq. 3), stated as the explicit ODE D(h) = (P - I_infil)/(delta_omega*h + eta_omega). h is the single integrated state; eta_omega and delta_omega are algebraic (observed). Migrated from EnvironmentalTransport.jl@a48559c4 src/surface_runoff.jl:232 (`HeavisideBoundaryCondition` @component). Because the head equation conserves eta_omega(h)*h - (P - I_infil)*t, every ODE-integration test below is checked against the exact conservation law, not merely against a prior solver run.

Upstream HeavisideBoundaryCondition is an MTK @component building a raw System(eqs, t) from two @constants (one_over_pi = 1/pi, one_half = 0.5), three @parameters (omega, P, I_infil), three time-indexed @variables (h, eta_omega, delta_omega) and three equations. It implements the smoothed Heaviside surface boundary condition of Wang et al. (2020) – the coupling device that lets a single surface node switch continuously between a ponded (saturated) boundary and an unsaturated boundary as the pressure head h crosses zero, without a hard ifelse branch.

Physics. Eq. 5a defines the smoothed Heaviside step eta_omega = (1/pi)*atan(h/omega) + 1/2, and Eq. 5b the smoothed Dirac delta delta_omega = (1/pi)*omega/(omega^2 + h^2). These converge to the true unit step and Dirac delta as omega -> 0+, and delta_omega is exactly d(eta_omega)/dh. The surface boundary condition Eq. 3 is d/dt[eta_omega(h)*h] = P - I_infil; expanding the time derivative with the product rule, (eta_omega’(h)*h + eta_omega(h))dh/dt = P - I_infil, and since eta_omega’(h) = delta_omega(h) the component states the head equation as the explicit ODE D(h) = (P - I_infil)/(delta_omegah + eta_omega).

Variable classification. h is the single genuine state – the only variable with a D(.) derivative. eta_omega and delta_omega are algebraic functions of h (no derivative); the bead’s features list is variables, parameters, observed and these two are the observed quantities. All three are encoded as type: state with a defining entry in the equations array (eta_omega and delta_omega via plain lhs = rhs algebraic equations, h via a D(.) equation). This preserves the upstream pre-mtkcompile structure exactly: the raw System(eqs, t) has three unknowns and three equations – the invariant the upstream structural test ‘HeavisideBoundaryCondition - Structural Verification’ (test/surface_runoff_test.jl:223-240) asserts (length(equations(hbc)) == 3; h, eta_omega, delta_omega all in unknowns). The encoding matches the verified sibling migrations whose algebraically-defined outputs are likewise type: state + equations entries (species_lifetime.esm, oh_production.esm). When the ESS runner compiles the model it eliminates the two algebraic equations, leaving h as the sole integrated state and eta_omega/delta_omega as observed – exactly the upstream ‘HeavisideBoundaryCondition - Compilation’ test (test/surface_runoff_test.jl:242-249), which asserts length(unknowns(mtkcompile(hbc))) == 1.

Constants. one_over_pi (1/pi) and one_half (0.5) are upstream MTK @constants. They are encoded as type: parameter with fixed defaults – the rig-wide treatment of MTK constants, matching the verified sibling photostationary.esm (its one constant). They are mathematical constants, not tunable inputs. one_over_pi’s default is the Float64 nearest 1/pi; every inline-test expected value below is evaluated with that exact Float64, as the runner evaluates the AST. No variable name collides with the ESS validator’s reserved physical-constant registry {R, k_B, N_A}, so no rename was needed.

Conserved quantity – exact ODE reference values. The head equation is, by construction, D(h) = (P - I_infil)/(d/dh[eta_omega(h)*h]), so d/dt[eta_omega(h(t))*h(t)] = P - I_infil exactly. The quantity Phi(h) := eta_omega(h)*h therefore evolves linearly in time: Phi(h(t)) = Phi(h0) + (P - I_infil)t. Phi is strictly increasing in h (Phi’(h) = delta_omegah + eta_omega lies in (0, 1) for all real h), so h(t) is the unique root of Phi(h) = Phi(h0) + (P - I_infil)*t. Every ODE-integration test below pins h(t) (and the algebraic eta_omega, delta_omega evaluated at it) to that root, computed by Newton iteration on the closed-form Phi – an analytic reference, not a value read back from a prior solver run. The inline tests therefore check the runner’s time integration against the exact conservation law of the model.

Default scenario. The upstream @variables/@parameters carry no defaults except omega = 1.0e-4 m. The .esm defaults assemble one self-consistent canonical scenario from the upstream test values: h = 0.01 m (1 cm ponded), P = 2.0e-6 m/s (~7.2 mm/hr), I_infil = 1.0e-6 m/s (~3.6 mm/hr), omega = 1.0e-4 m – the exact configuration of the upstream test ‘Net positive flux increases head’ (test/surface_runoff_test.jl:293-309). The net flux P - I_infil = 1.0e-6 m/s > 0, so the default scenario ponds: the head rises slowly from 1 cm.

Upstream test reproduction. The Julia suite (test/surface_runoff_test.jl) has six @testitems for this component; all are reproduced:

  • ‘Structural Verification’ and ‘Compilation’ – reproduced structurally: the file declares three equations entries and three state variables, and the runner loads + compiles it (eliminating eta_omega/delta_omega to observed) before any assertion is checked.
  • ‘Smoothed Heaviside properties’ (eta_omega(0) = 0.5; eta_omega -> 1 for h » omega; eta_omega -> 0 for h « -omega) – reproduced and tightened from the upstream atol 1e-10 / 1e-3 by tests heaviside_at_transition_zero_flux, heaviside_deep_ponding, heaviside_deep_unsaturated, plus the exact intermediate point heaviside_head_equals_smoothing_scale (h = omega gives eta_omega = (1/pi)*atan(1) + 1/2 = 0.75).
  • ‘Smoothed delta function’ (delta_omega(0) = 1/(pi*omega); delta_omega « its peak far from h = 0) – reproduced and tightened from the upstream rtol 1e-6 by delta_peak_at_transition and delta_decay_far_field.
  • ‘Net positive flux increases head’ (P > I_infil ponds the surface) – reproduced quantitatively by default_ponding_100s and net_precipitation_raises_head, which pin the integrated head to the conserved-quantity root rather than only asserting h(end) > h(0).
  • ‘Transition from unsaturated to saturated’ (h starts negative, precipitation drives it positive) – reproduced by unsaturated_to_saturated_transition (h: -0.05 m -> +0.10 m over 10000 s), which pins both the zero-crossing midpoint and the endpoint. The remaining tests extend coverage: the zero-net-flux equilibrium (P = I_infil holds h, eta_omega, delta_omega exactly constant), net infiltration draining the head, and the algebraic vars sampled across the ponded, transition and unsaturated regimes.

Tolerance rationale. Model-level default rel = 1.0e-6. Assertions at t = 0 and on the zero-net-flux equilibrium tests are tightened to rel = 1.0e-9 (or abs = 1.0e-12 where the expected value is exactly 0): at t = 0 there is no integration drift, and when P = I_infil the head derivative is exactly 0.0 so h – and the algebraic eta_omega, delta_omega – stay pinned to their initial values. eta_omega/delta_omega evaluate atan and a rational expression, correctly-rounded to ~1 ULP, leaving ample headroom under rel = 1.0e-9. ODE-integration endpoints keep rel = 1.0e-6 (the analytic conserved-quantity root vs. the runner’s adaptive Tsit5/Rosenbrock23 integration at reltol 1e-10); the stiff fast-transient test unsaturated_to_saturated_transition uses rel = 1.0e-5. No assertion expects a non-finite value – delta_omega*h + eta_omega = Phi’(h) > 0 for all real h, so the head ODE never divides by zero.

Unit balance (verified). h, omega in m; P, I_infil in m/s; eta_omega, one_over_pi, one_half dimensionless; delta_omega in m^-1. eta_omega one_over_pi*atan(h/omega) + one_half: atan of (m/m) is dimensionless, [1][1] + [1] = [1]. delta_omega one_over_pi*omega/(omega^2 + h^2): [1][m]/([m^2]) = [m^-1]. D(h) (P - I_infil)/(delta_omega*h + eta_omega): [m/s]/([m^-1]*[m] + [1]) = [m/s]/[1] = [m/s] = d[h]/d[t]. SI throughout; no unit conversion at parse or runtime.

Provenance. Structural scaffold (variables, the three-equation AST) generated by EarthSciAST.mtk2esm walking the actual MTK System built by HeavisideBoundaryCondition(); metadata, units, reference, tolerances, tests and examples hand-authored. The scaffolder emitted no unresolved schema-gap markers; the bead’s blocking_gap field is none._

Variables

NameUnitsDefaultDescription
hm0.01Soil water pressure head at the surface node [m] (Wang et al. 2020, Eq. 3). h is the single genuine time-dependent unknown of the component: the only variable carrying a D(.) derivative. Its sign is the ponding indicator – h >= 0 is the ponded (saturated) state where surface water has accumulated, h < 0 is the unsaturated state where the surface can still accept infiltration. The smoothed Heaviside eta_omega(h) and Dirac delta_omega(h) below switch the surface boundary condition continuously across h = 0 instead of with a hard branch. The default 0.01 m (1 cm of ponded water) places the canonical scenario in the ponded regime, matching the upstream test ‘Net positive flux increases head’ (test/surface_runoff_test.jl:293-309).

Parameters

NameUnitsDefaultDescription
ωm0.0001Smoothing parameter for the Heaviside/Dirac approximation [m] (Wang et al. 2020, Eq. 5). omega sets the head scale over which the surface boundary condition switches between the ponded and unsaturated states: the transition width of eta_omega and the half-width of the delta_omega Lorentzian are both O(omega). Smaller omega -> sharper switch (eta_omega -> true step, delta_omega -> true Dirac delta); larger omega -> smoother but less accurate. The upstream default 1.0e-4 m (0.1 mm) is small relative to typical ponded depths so the approximation is tight while keeping the ODE non-stiff.
Pm/s2e-06Precipitation / irrigation flux density at the surface [m/s] (Wang et al. 2020, Eq. 3). An externally-supplied forcing – the rate at which water arrives at the surface node. Encoded as type: parameter because the component has no governing equation for it. The default 2.0e-6 m/s (~7.2 mm/hr, a moderate rain rate) is the value used in the upstream test ‘Net positive flux increases head’ (test/surface_runoff_test.jl:302). The surface boundary condition is driven by the net flux P - I_infil; with the defaults P - I_infil = 1.0e-6 m/s > 0, so the head rises.
I_infilm/s1e-06Infiltration flux density at the surface [m/s] (Wang et al. 2020, Eq. 3). An externally-supplied sink – the rate at which water leaves the surface node into the subsurface. Encoded as type: parameter for the same reason as P. The default 1.0e-6 m/s (~3.6 mm/hr) is the value used in the upstream test ‘Net positive flux increases head’ (test/surface_runoff_test.jl:302). Only the net flux P - I_infil enters the head equation: P > I_infil ponds the surface (dh/dt > 0), P < I_infil drains it (dh/dt < 0), and P = I_infil holds the head fixed (dh/dt = 0).
one_over_pi10.3183098861837907The constant 1/pi [dimensionless]. Declared upstream as an MTK @constants entry (one_over_pi = 1.0/pi) so that Eqs. 5a and 5b read in their textbook form; encoded here as type: parameter with a fixed default, the rig-wide treatment of MTK constants (cf. the sibling photostationary.esm one). It is a mathematical constant, not a tunable input – leave it at its default. The default is the Float64 nearest 1/pi.
one_half10.5The constant 1/2 [dimensionless]. Declared upstream as an MTK @constants entry (one_half = 0.5) – the additive offset that centres the smoothed Heaviside eta_omega on 1/2 at h = 0. Encoded as type: parameter with a fixed default, as for one_over_pi; it is a mathematical constant, not a tunable input.

Observed

NameUnitsDefaultDescription
η_ω1Smoothed Heaviside step function eta_omega(h) [dimensionless] (Wang et al. 2020, Eq. 5a): eta_omega = (1/pi)*atan(h/omega) + 1/2. A continuous approximation to the unit step H(h) that converges to it as omega -> 0+. eta_omega(0) = 1/2 exactly; eta_omega -> 1 as h/omega -> +inf (fully ponded) and -> 0 as h/omega -> -inf (fully unsaturated). It is the fraction by which the surface behaves as a ponded (Dirichlet-head) boundary. eta_omega has no D(.) derivative – it is an algebraic function of h, encoded as type: state with a defining entry in equations (see notes); the ESS runner eliminates it to an observed variable at compile time.
δ_ωm^-1Smoothed Dirac delta function delta_omega(h) [m^-1] (Wang et al. 2020, Eq. 5b): delta_omega = (1/pi)omega/(omega^2 + h^2). delta_omega is exactly the derivative of the smoothed Heaviside with respect to head, delta_omega = d(eta_omega)/dh – a Lorentzian that converges to the Dirac delta as omega -> 0+. It peaks at h = 0 with delta_omega(0) = 1/(piomega) and decays as 1/h^2 far from the transition. Like eta_omega it is algebraic in h (no D(.) derivative), encoded as type: state with a defining equations entry and eliminated to observed at compile time.

Smoothed Dirac delta function delta_omega(h) [m^-1] (Wang et al.

Analyses

ponding_head_rise

Headline run: the canonical ponding scenario (defaults – h0 = 0.01 m, P = 2.0e-6 m/s, I_infil = 1.0e-6 m/s, omega = 1.0e-4 m) integrated for 100 s. With a positive net flux the surface ponds and the pressure head rises slowly and almost linearly (the smoothed Heaviside eta_omega is near 1 in the ponded regime, so d/dt[eta_omega*h] = P - I_infil reduces to dh/dt ~ P - I_infil). Plots the head h(t) and the smoothed Heaviside indicator eta_omega(t) over the run.

Time span: 0.0 → 100.0

Surface pressure head h over 100 s, rising from 1.00 cm under the net precipitation flux P - I_infil = 1.0e-6 m/s.

Smoothed Heaviside indicator eta_omega over 100 s – stays just below 1 throughout, confirming the surface remains in the ponded state.

wetting_transition_over_time

A wetting run that carries the surface across the full transition: starting unsaturated at h0 = -0.05 m, precipitation P = 1.0e-5 m/s (no infiltration) drives the head to +0.10 m over 10000 s, with omega = 1.0e-3 m. This reproduces the upstream test ‘Transition from unsaturated to saturated’ as a time series. The head h(t) climbs through zero near t = 5000 s; the smoothed Heaviside eta_omega(t) rises from ~0 (unsaturated) through 0.5 at the crossing to ~1 (ponded); and the smoothed Dirac delta_omega(t) spikes sharply to its peak 1/(pi*omega) exactly as the head crosses h = 0, then decays – the continuous switch firing as the boundary condition flips.

Time span: 0.0 → 10000.0

Surface pressure head h over 10000 s, climbing from -0.05 m (unsaturated) through zero near t = 5000 s to +0.10 m (ponded) under steady precipitation.

Smoothed Heaviside eta_omega over the wetting run – an S-curve in time rising from ~0 through 0.5 (at the h = 0 crossing) toward 1 as the surface switches into the ponded state.

Smoothed Dirac delta delta_omega over the wetting run: near zero while the head is far from the transition, spiking to its peak 1/(pi*omega) = 318 m^-1 as h crosses zero, then decaying – the switch firing in time.

smoothing_parameter_sweep

Sweep of the smoothing parameter omega across three orders of magnitude (1.0e-5 to 1.0e-2 m, logarithmic) at a fixed ponded head (h = 0.01 m) and zero net flux (P = I_infil = 1.0e-6 m/s, so the head – and hence eta_omega, delta_omega – stays constant through each run). Surfaces how the smoothing parameter controls the approximation: as omega -> 0 the smoothed Heaviside eta_omega(h = 0.01) -> 1 (a sharp step) and the off-peak smoothed Dirac delta_omega -> 0; as omega grows the step softens and eta_omega relaxes toward 0.5.

Time span: 0.0 → 1.0

Swept over: ω

Smoothed Heaviside eta_omega at the fixed head h = 0.01 m as a function of the smoothing parameter omega (log x axis). Decreases monotonically from ~1 (sharp step, h » omega) toward 0.5 (omega comparable to or larger than h).

Smoothed Dirac delta delta_omega at the fixed head h = 0.01 m as a function of omega (log x axis). delta_omega = (1/pi)*omega/(omega^2 + h^2) rises with omega while omega « h, peaks where omega = h = 0.01 m, then falls.

final_head_vs_precipitation

Sweep of the precipitation flux P from 0 to 4.0e-6 m/s at fixed infiltration (I_infil = 1.0e-6 m/s, the default) and the default ponded head (h0 = 0.01 m, omega = 1.0e-4 m), each run integrated 500 s. Surfaces the surface-runoff flux balance: the final head is governed by the net flux P - I_infil. For P < I_infil the surface drains and the head ends below its 1 cm start; at P = I_infil = 1.0e-6 m/s the net flux is zero and the head is unchanged; for P > I_infil the surface ponds and the head ends above 1 cm. The final-head-versus-P curve is the equilibrium response of the boundary condition to the precipitation rate.

Time span: 0.0 → 500.0

Swept over: P

Final surface pressure head h after 500 s as a function of the precipitation flux P (infiltration fixed at I_infil = 1.0e-6 m/s). A monotonically increasing line crossing the unchanged-head level h = 0.01 m at P = I_infil: draining for P below that point, ponding above.

The Julia suite (test/surface_runoff_test.jl) has six `@testitem`s for this component; all are reproduced:\n- 'Structural Verification' and 'Compilation' -- reproduced structurally: the file declares three `equations` entries and three `state` variables, and the runner loads + compiles it (eliminating eta_omega/delta_omega to observed) before any assertion is checked.\n- 'Smoothed Heaviside properties' (eta_omega(0) = 0.5; eta_omega -> 1 for h >> omega; eta_omega -> 0 for h << -omega) -- reproduced and tightened from the upstream atol 1e-10 / 1e-3 by tests `heaviside_at_transition_zero_flux`, `heaviside_deep_ponding`, `heaviside_deep_unsaturated`, plus the exact intermediate point `heaviside_head_equals_smoothing_scale` (h = omega gives eta_omega = (1/pi)*atan(1) + 1/2 = 0.75).\n- 'Smoothed delta function' (delta_omega(0) = 1/(pi*omega); delta_omega << its peak far from h = 0) -- reproduced and tightened from the upstream rtol 1e-6 by `delta_peak_at_transition` and `delta_decay_far_field`.\n- 'Net positive flux increases head' (P > I_infil ponds the surface) -- reproduced quantitatively by `default_ponding_100s` and `net_precipitation_raises_head`, which pin the integrated head to the conserved-quantity root rather than only asserting h(end) > h(0).\n- 'Transition from unsaturated to saturated' (h starts negative, precipitation drives it positive) -- reproduced by `unsaturated_to_saturated_transition` (h: -0.05 m -> +0.10 m over 10000 s), which pins both the zero-crossing midpoint and the endpoint.\nThe remaining tests extend coverage: the zero-net-flux equilibrium (P = I_infil holds h, eta_omega, delta_omega exactly constant), net infiltration draining the head, and the algebraic vars sampled across the ponded, transition and unsaturated regimes.\n\nTolerance rationale. Model-level default rel = 1.0e-6. Assertions at t = 0 and on the zero-net-flux equilibrium tests are tightened to rel = 1.0e-9 (or abs = 1.0e-12 where the expected value is exactly 0): at t = 0 there is no integration drift, and when P = I_infil the head derivative is exactly 0.0 so h -- and the algebraic eta_omega, delta_omega -- stay pinned to their initial values. eta_omega/delta_omega evaluate atan and a rational expression, correctly-rounded to ~1 ULP, leaving ample headroom under rel = 1.0e-9. ODE-integration endpoints keep rel = 1.0e-6 (the analytic conserved-quantity root vs. the runner's adaptive Tsit5/Rosenbrock23 integration at reltol 1e-10); the stiff fast-transient test `unsaturated_to_saturated_transition` uses rel = 1.0e-5. No assertion expects a non-finite value -- delta_omega*h + eta_omega = Phi'(h) > 0 for all real h, so the head ODE never divides by zero.\n\nUnit balance (verified). h, omega in m; P, I_infil in m/s; eta_omega, one_over_pi, one_half dimensionless; delta_omega in m^-1.\n eta_omega `one_over_pi*atan(h/omega) + one_half`: atan of (m/m) is dimensionless, [1]*[1] + [1] = [1].\n delta_omega `one_over_pi*omega/(omega^2 + h^2)`: [1]*[m]/([m^2]) = [m^-1].\n D(h) `(P - I_infil)/(delta_omega*h + eta_omega)`: [m/s]/([m^-1]*[m] + [1]) = [m/s]/[1] = [m/s] = d[h]/d[t]. SI throughout; no unit conversion at parse or runtime.\n\nProvenance. Structural scaffold (variables, the three-equation AST) generated by EarthSciAST.mtk2esm walking the actual MTK `System` built by `HeavisideBoundaryCondition()`; metadata, units, reference, tolerances, tests and examples hand-authored. The scaffolder emitted no unresolved schema-gap markers; the bead's `blocking_gap` field is `none`."

For P < I_infil the surface drains and the head ends below its 1 cm start; at P = I_infil = 1.0e-6 m/s the net flux is zero and the head is unchanged; for P > I_infil the surface ponds and the head ends above 1 cm.
