Clark1977AnelasticSystem
Complete 3D anelastic atmospheric dynamics system in terrain-following coordinates from Clark (1977), 'A Small-Scale Dynamic Model Using a Terrain-Following Coordinate Transformation', Journal of Computational Physics 24, 186-215. The full nonlinear Clark (1977) model assembled as a hierarchical composition of eight subsystems: the isentropic base state (Eqs. 2.6-2.9), Witch-of-Agnesi mountain topography (Eq. 7.1), the terrain-following coordinate transformation (Eqs. 2.20-2.27), the Smagorinsky turbulence closure (Eqs. 2.15-2.19), the anelastic momentum residuals (Eqs. 2.1-2.3), anelastic mass continuity (Eq. 2.4), anelastic thermodynamics with turbulent heat flux (Eq. 2.14) and the diagnostic pressure equation (Section 4). Migrated from AtmosphericDynamics.jl@816cc391 src/clark1977.jl:582 (`Clark1977AnelasticSystem` @component) — a pure subsystem composition (`System(Equation[], t; systems=[...])`, no coupling equations): the eight subsystems are inlined verbatim under `subsystems` (ESS spec §4.7) and remain dynamically independent. Purely algebraic — every subsystem is a diagnostic (observed-only) system with no time derivative. SI units throughout.

Upstream Clark1977AnelasticSystem is an MTK @component that composes the eight Clark (1977) subsystems into one hierarchical model via System(Equation[], t; systems = [base_state, topography, transform, turbulence, momentum, mass_continuity, thermodynamics, pressure_diag], name, checks = false). The equation list is empty (eqs = Equation[]) — the upstream docstring states ‘No additional equations needed - this is a composition of subsystems’. The eight subsystems are assembled under one parent but left dynamically independent: there are no coupling equations, no connects and no shared variables (base_state’s ρ̄ output is not wired into momentum’s ρ̄ input, topography’s z_s is not wired into transform’s z_s input, etc.). The composition is purely structural.
Migration approach (ESS spec §4.7 subsystem composition): each of the eight subsystems is inlined under subsystems, keyed by its upstream @named name — base_state, topography, transform, turbulence, momentum, mass_continuity, thermodynamics, pressure_diag. Seven are copied verbatim (variables + equations) from their already-migrated standalone .esm files in this same directory: topography ← witch_of_agnesi.esm, transform ← terrain_following.esm, turbulence ← smagorinsky.esm, momentum ← anelastic_momentum.esm, mass_continuity ← anelastic_mass.esm, thermodynamics ← anelastic_thermo.esm, pressure_diag ← diagnostic_pressure.esm. The eighth, base_state, is migrated here directly from src/clark1977.jl:49 (IsentropicBaseState @component) because its standalone target isentropic_base_state.esm is not yet present on main; the inline copy is self-contained and faithful to the upstream @component.
No input re-typing: because the parent declares no coupling equations, every subsystem input keeps the parameter type it carries in its standalone .esm file. (Contrast the sibling subsystem-composed migration components/gaschem/combined/tropospheric_chemistry.esm, where subsystem inputs are re-typed parameter→state because the parent’s coupling equations .<input> ~ <input> govern them and a parameter cannot be an equation LHS. Clark1977AnelasticSystem has no such equations, so no re-typing is needed — the precedent here is components/gaschem/radiation/radiation_fundamentals.esm, which likewise composes subsystems with empty top-level variables/equations.) The top-level model therefore has variables: {} and equations: [].
base_state derived constants: IsentropicBaseState declares five MTK @constants (g, R_d, c_p, inv_kappa, inv_kappa_m1). The .esm schema has no constant variable type, so each is carried as a fixed-default parameter. inv_kappa and inv_kappa_m1 are derived constants — their upstream defaults are expressions of the others (inv_kappa = c_p/R_d, inv_kappa_m1 = c_p/R_d − 1) — and the default field carries the evaluated IEEE-754 double (1004/287 = 3.4982578397212545 and 3.4982578397212545 − 1 = 2.4982578397212545); the derived constant is kept as a named symbol in the p_bar / ρ_bar equations rather than inlined, matching the upstream System(eqs,t). base_state’s three @parameters (Θ, P_0, z) become parameter and its four @variables (T_bar, p_bar, ρ_bar, H_s) become state; each state is the LHS of one non-differential equation. base_state is dimensionally consistent and is constructed without checks=false upstream.
checks=false: the upstream Clark1977AnelasticSystem (and its DiagnosticPressure subsystem) pass checks=false to System due to unit complexities in the diagnostic-pressure formulation. The .esm schema has no checks field and the ESS runners perform no dimensional analysis, so checks=false carries over with nothing to encode — the pressure_diag subsystem is copied verbatim from the gate-passing diagnostic_pressure.esm.
system_kind: every one of the eight subsystems is purely algebraic (every equation is an ~ relation; there is no D(·) time derivative anywhere), so the flattened composed model is a fully-algebraic diagnostic system. system_kind is left unset, matching all eight standalone subsystem files and the sibling subsystem-composed radiation_fundamentals.esm.
Examples: this file declares no examples block. The example-plot renderer (tools/render_example_plots.py) resolves algebraic (non-dynamic) models with an equation-resolution plan that operates on the top-level model alone and does not descend into subsystems; a subsystem-composed algebraic model is therefore not plottable by the renderer. This mirrors the two sibling subsystem-composed migrations radiation_fundamentals.esm and tropospheric_chemistry.esm, which likewise declare no examples. The inline tests block provides the full numeric verification.
Tolerance (model-level rel=1e-6, abs=1e-9): the flattened system is eight independent algebraic blocks of small closed-form expression trees; the canonical runner resolves each without iterative error accumulation. rel=1e-6 covers float64 round-off and any sub-ULP difference between the Julia walker and the Python gate; abs=1e-9 gates the many intended exact zeros — the residual-type outputs of turbulence, momentum, mass_continuity, thermodynamics and pressure_diag vanish identically under the quiescent default state. This rel/abs pair is the one used by the standalone anelastic_momentum.esm / diagnostic_pressure.esm / smagorinsky.esm / terrain_following.esm / witch_of_agnesi.esm subsystem files.
Test reproduction: the upstream Julia suite (test/clark1977_test.jl:246-260) contains a single Clark1977AnelasticSystem testitem — Clark1977AnelasticSystem Structure — which asserts only that the composed object is a System and that all eight subsystems are present by name; it makes no numerical assertion. The ten inline tests reproduce that structural intent through the dot-namespaced flattened system and add full numeric coverage: composed_default_canonical_all_subsystems exercises every output of all eight subsystems at default parameters (proving all eight are present and computing); eight per-subsystem tests (base_state_elevated_z1000, topography_half_width, transform_full, turbulence_full_deformation, momentum_full_residual, mass_continuity_all_outputs, thermodynamics_all_heat_flux, pressure_diag_full) drive each subsystem with a non-trivial parameter set routed through the composition via dot-namespaced parameter_overrides, with expected values taken from the corresponding standalone file’s gate-verified tests (base_state’s from the closed-form Clark 1977 Eqs. 2.6-2.9); and namespace_isolation_independent_subsystems overrides parameters in two subsystems at once and asserts a third, un-overridden subsystem stays at its default — confirming the subsystems are dynamically independent, as the upstream empty-coupling composition requires. All expected values are the canonical ESS Python runner output of the composed model (tools/run_esm_inline_tests.py). SI units throughout._
