StagePrognosisHCB
Stage (1973) static regression model for height to crown base (HCB) of lodgepole pine. Predicts HCB from tree height, stand density (CCF), elevation, relative tree size (DBH/RMSQD), and habitat type. Single explicit-algebraic equation: HCB = one_foot*(b0 + b1*HT_ft + b2*ln(CCF) + b3*EL_100ft + b4*DBH_in/RMSQD_in + HAB). All regression coefficients are in feet-space; result converted to meters. Migrated from Vegetation.jl@010c3774dc5646d81806c6119c8a029a70f6c9a0:src/stage_prognosis.jl:257.

Upstream StagePrognosisHCB is an MTK @component implementing the Stage (1973, p. 16) regression equation for height to crown base (HCB) as a function of tree and stand characteristics. The component declares 6 @parameters (HT_input, DBH_input, CCF, EL, RMSQD, HAB), 3 unit-conversion @constants (one_inch=0.0254 m, one_foot=0.3048 m, hundred_feet=30.48 m), 5 regression @constants (b_HCB_0=-29.26, b_HCB_HT=0.61, b_HCB_CCF=9.178, b_HCB_EL=-0.222, b_HCB_DBH_RMSQD=-5.8), and 1 algebraic @variable (HCB_pred), with 1 equation returning System(eqs, t; name). The upstream Julia tests (runtests.jl) confirm length(unknowns(mtkcompile(sys))) == 0 for all-algebraic System objects after structural simplification.
System kind: the single equation HCB_pred ~ one_foot*(b_HCB_0 + b_HCB_HT*(HT_input/one_foot) + b_HCB_CCF*log(CCF) + b_HCB_EL*(EL/hundred_feet) + b_HCB_DBH_RMSQD*(DBH_input/one_inch)/(RMSQD/one_inch) + HAB) is an explicit closed-form assignment. HCB_pred depends only on parameters (all RHS terms are parameters or constants) — a triangular single-variable system with zero iterations, no Newton solve, no initialization_equations, no guesses. system_kind is left unset (default ‘ode’, zero differential states), identical to components/geodynamics/mogi.esm and other explicit-algebraic components.
Note on migration tracker blocking gap. The tracker lists this bead as gt-ebuq (init_eq/system_kind=nonlinear). Investigation of the upstream source confirms the equation is EXPLICITLY algebraic — HCB_pred is a direct closed-form function of 6 parameters with no implicit coupling. The blocking label was applied conservatively to the entire Vegetation gt-ebuq group; StagePrognosisHCB does not use NonlinearSystem semantics in practice (MTK may compile an all-algebraic System(eqs,t) to a NonlinearProblem internally, but the physical equation requires no iteration). Migration uses the explicit-algebraic path without system_kind, exactly as for components/geodynamics/mogi.esm.
Note on constants vs parameters. All 8 @constants (3 unit-conversion + 5 regression) are encoded as type: parameter with their upstream default values. The ESM schema has no constant type — this follows the same convention as components/vegetation/landis_biomass.esm (e1, B_MAX_ratio, one_yr encoded as parameters) and components/geodynamics/mogi.esm.
Equation faithfulness. The equation from src/stage_prognosis.jl:294-301 is preserved verbatim: HCB_pred = one_foot * (b_HCB_0 + b_HCB_HT * (HT_input / one_foot) + b_HCB_CCF * log(CCF) + b_HCB_EL * (EL / hundred_feet) + b_HCB_DBH_RMSQD * (DBH_input / one_inch) / (RMSQD / one_inch) + HAB)
Default parameters reproduce the upstream Julia defaults: HT_input = 60 ft = 18.288 m, DBH_input = 6 in = 0.1524 m, CCF = 100, EL = 43 hundreds-of-ft = 1310.64 m, RMSQD = 7 in = 0.1778 m, HAB = 0 (Abies/Xerophyllum). Default HCB_pred ≈ 10.6951 m = 35.09 ft.
The upstream source lists four habitat type adjustments (in feet-space): HAB=0.0 (Abies/Xerophyllum), HAB=-4.24 (Abies/Vaccinium), HAB=-3.86 (Abies/Pachistima), HAB=-5.47 (Pseudotsuga/Calamagrostis). All four are covered by inline tests.
Tolerance rationale. Closed-form algebraic evaluation — single explicit assignment, no ODE integration, no implicit solve — so there is no integrator error. rel=1e-6 covers float64 round-off in the log/multiply/divide chains; consistent with mogi.esm and atmospheric_diffusion.esm._

habitat_type_comparison
Sweep HAB across the four Stage (1973) habitat types (Abies/Xerophyllum 0.0, Abies/Vaccinium -4.24, Abies/Pachistima -3.86, Pseudotsuga/Calamagrostis -5.47) with default tree and stand parameters. Shows the additive shift in predicted crown base height across habitat types; negative HAB values (shadier habitats) lower the predicted HCB.
