_Source: Aerosol.jl src/dynamics.jl:221 @ commit c8c640bb636b22f2425460e9ed5cba50793bfee1 (esm-isv). This ESM serializes the n_bins=5 instantiation of DiscreteCoagulation(n_bins::Int). The upstream MTK component uses a Julia integer parameter n_bins to generate n_bins ODE equations at compile time; the ESM schema does not support structural integer parameters, so the equations are unrolled to the fixed n_bins=5 case as scalar state variables N1..N5, matching the canonical Aerosol.jl test suite (test/dynamics_test.jl ‘DiscreteCoagulation structure’ uses n_bins=5).
Equation derivation. The general discrete coagulation equation (Eq. 13.59) for constant K simplifies to: dN_k/dt = (K/2)·Σ_{j=1}^{k-1} N_j·N_{k-j} - K·N_k·N_total. For k=1: no formation term, so dN1/dt = -K·N1·N_total. For k=2: formation = K/2·N1², so dN2/dt = K/2·N1² - K·N2·N_total. For k=3: formation = K/2·2·N1·N2 = K·N1·N2, so dN3/dt = K·N1·N2 - K·N3·N_total. For k=4: formation = K/2·(2·N1·N3+N2²), so dN4/dt = K·N1·N3 + K/2·N2² - K·N4·N_total. For k=5: formation = K/2·2·(N1·N4+N2·N3) = K·(N1·N4+N2·N3), so dN5/dt = K·(N1·N4+N2·N3) - K·N5·N_total.
τ_c and N_total are serialized as observed variables with inline expressions, consistent with the ESS pattern for purely algebraic derived quantities that drive ODE right-hand sides (cf. tropospheric_budget.esm). They are referenced by name in the 5 ODE equations.
Analytical solution (Eq. 13.71) for monodisperse initial condition (all monomers, N_k(0)=N_0·δ_{k1}): N_k(t) = N_0·θ^(k-1)/(1+θ)^(k+1) where θ=t/τ_c. The 5-bin numerical model departs from this by ~0.7–0.8% at t=τ_c because coagulation events producing k>5 particles are lost from the system, leaving more mass in lower bins.
Tolerance rationale (model-level rel=1e-6): sets the ODE integration accuracy. Test-level tolerances are set wider (5e-4 to 5e-2) to cover physical truncation from the finite 5-bin approximation._

monodisperse_coagulation_evolution
Evolution of a 5-bin discrete coagulation system starting from a pure monomer distribution (N_0=1e12 m^-3, K=1e-15 m^3/s). Shows how monomers (N1) decay while higher k-mer bins (N2–N5) grow and then decay in sequence. The total number concentration N_total decays monotonically as coagulation events merge particles. Time window is 3×τ_c=6000 s.
